What do termites look like?

Termites vary in appearance depending on their role within the colony. The most common types encountered are workers, soldiers, and swarmers (also known as alates).

Workers are typically pale, soft-bodied insects with straight antennae. They are about 1/4 inch long, wingless, and are responsible for building and maintaining the nest, as well as feeding and grooming other termites.

Soldiers are similar in appearance to workers but have larger, darker heads and powerful mandibles used for defense. They are tasked with protecting the colony from predators like ants.

Swarmers, or alates, are reproductive termites with wings. They are darker in color and have a thicker waist compared to workers and soldiers. Swarmers emerge from mature colonies during swarming season to mate and establish new colonies. After mating, they shed their wings and seek out suitable nesting sites to start new colonies.

How do you check for termites?

Checking for termites involves inspecting both the interior and exterior of your property for signs of their presence. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Inspect Wood: Tap on wooden surfaces such as walls, floors, and furniture with a screwdriver or similar tool. Hollow-sounding or damaged wood may indicate termite activity.
  2. Look for Mud Tubes: Termites construct mud tubes to travel between their nests and food sources. Check the foundation, walls, and wooden structures for mud tubes, especially in crawl spaces and basements.
  3. Check for Swarmers: During swarming season, keep an eye out for flying termites (swarmers) near windows, doors, or light sources. Finding discarded wings around windowsills or on the floor may also indicate a recent termite swarm.
  4. Inspect Exterior: Examine the exterior of your home for signs of termite activity, including mud tubes on foundation walls, wood that sounds hollow when tapped, and damaged or sagging wooden structures.
  5. Check Moisture: Termites are attracted to moisture. Inspect areas with high humidity, such as basements, bathrooms, and crawl spaces, for signs of water damage or leaks that could attract termites.
  6. Professional Inspection: Consider hiring a professional pest control company for a thorough termite inspection, especially if you suspect an infestation or if your property is located in a termite-prone area. Professional inspectors have the expertise and tools to detect even hidden signs of termite activity.
